Electrolysis treatments

What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis is a way of removing individual hairs from the face or body using a hair-thin metal probe which is slid into each individual hair follicle. Using a combination of energies the hair is effectively destroyed.

What is involved in an electrolysis treatment?
Your first treatment will involve a consultation with the electrologist. She will determine your type of hair, skin type and take a detailed history of any medications you may be taking and your general health. Once this consultation has taken place your first treatment will begin. The electrologist will ask you to lay down on the bed and make yourself comfortable. The area to be treated will be wiped over with a sanitising product to ensure that the skin is free of oils, makeup and impurities. Your electrologist will always wear disposable gloves at each treatment and a new and disposable probe will always be used to ensure your health and safety. At this time a very fine probe will be inserted into each individual hair follicle at the surface of the skin. A current is applied to the hair to destroy it. The hair is then removed harmlessly with tweezers. At the end of your treatment a soothing product will be applied to your skin and post-care advice given to you before leaving your appointment.

How does electrolysis work?
There are three different kinds of energy used:

1. Galvanic Energy
Galvanic
electrolysis works by causing salt and water in the skin around the probe to be chemically altered to produce a small amount of sodium hydroxide, or lye. Lye is the active ingredient in some crystal drain openers. If enough is produced, it can damage the cells that cause hair growth.

2. Thermolysis Energy
Thermolysis
works by causing water molecules in the skin around the probe to vibrate, which creates heat. If enough heat is produced, it can damage the cells that cause hair growth.

3. Blend Energy
Blend
is based on the theory that lye is more caustic when heated. Theoretically, blend is more effective than other methods however this has not been proven to be 100%. Your electrologist can guide you on what energy would be best for you.

What causes unwanted hair growth?
Hair growth is the result of heredity and hormonal levels. Also, some medicines, temporary methods of hair removal, and some illnesses can stimulate hair growth. Your electrologist will determine at your first consultation why you have unwanted hair growth and can advise you on this.

How many treatments will I need?
Since many factors influence hair growth, you will need to return for many visits. The total number of sessions needed to remove hair permanently from a particular area will vary from person to person. Most clients return once a week or every other week to begin with and then on a regular basis until the hair has been successfully removed. Each treatment lasts between 15 minutes and 30 minutes.

Is electrolysis painful?
Most people find electrolysis is uncomfortable to some degree. However this does vary from person to person. If you find that the treatment is particularly uncomfortable inform your electrologist immediately. She can recommend some ways to make the treatment more comfortable for you.   She can also recommend a topical anaesthetic cream be applied prior to your treatment if required. If you would like to have this cream applied to your skin you can either purchase the product yourself from a pharmacy or ask your electrologist to apply it for you at least 30 minutes prior to your treatment. An additional fee will be charged for this service. Please ask your electrologist for more information about this topical cream treatment.

Where can I have electrolysis performed on my body?
Most areas of the body can be treated with electrolysis, including the eyebrows, face, thighs, abdomen, breasts, and legs.

Are there any side effects to electrolysis?
There are no permanent side effects. Sometimes, a slight reddening of the skin occurs during or immediately after treatment, but this will only last for a short time. Electrolysis is very safe and, unlike depilatories or bleaches, no harsh chemicals are used. After your treatment post-care advice will be given to you by your electrologist. If you notice that your skin does not settle after an hour or two contact your electrologist for more advice.

How do I choose an electrologist?
Electrologists are therapists who have undergone professional training. If you are considering undergoing electrolysis, it is very important that you do your research before committing to an appointment. You need to ensure that your electrologist is someone who is professional, well-trained and qualified and puts you at ease before, during and after your appointment. To find out about qualified electrologists:
  1. ask your electrologist to show you their formal qualifications. All electrologists at Absolute Bliss are nationally and internationally trained in electrolysis.
  2. ask around. One of the best ways to find any good service is to ask friends and family for recommendation. If you know anyone who has undergone electrolysis, ask for her input.
  3. enquire about a consultation. At Absolute Bliss we will give you a free consultation. During the consultation, we will ensure that all of your questions about the procedure are answered.
Your personal comfort is essential to us so that you can be confident in knowing you have made the right decision in choosing our therapists as your electrologist.

Electrolysis is the only PERMANENT hair removal system available today.
