SKINCARE 101 If you’re confused by all of the skincare products on the market have no fear. Here’s our essential guide to skincare. Use our skincare 101 lessons to teach yourself!
Cleansers are the core of the basic skincare trio. They free us from makeup, dirt and excess sebum (that’s oil). Cleanse once or twice daily depending on your skin type. If you’re prone to blocked pores, lots of oil through the t-zone and breakouts use a GEL cleanser. Delicate or drier skins should use a CREAM cleanser.
Toners have the benefit of removing excess traces of makeup, dirt and oil that your cleanser may leave behind. They also refine the skin for a better complexion and some toners even include AHA’s which act like a mini microdermabrasion to the skin (they remove the dead skin cells).
Moisturisers are the key to retaining the skin’s natural lubrication and provide a physical barrier against environmental pollutants. MOISTURE, MOISTURE, MOISTURE! If you have a drier skin you will need to use a heavier cream for night-time and if you have a sensitive skin something that is gentle and anti-inflammatory. The best moisturisers on the market today include Vitamin A, an ingredient that will effectively help fight the ageing process!
Serums deliver a high dose of beneficial ingredients into the skin. These same ingredients may be available in your moisturiser but in a serum they absorb faster into the superficial layers of the skin because they are made up in a water-based product. Serums will increase the efficacy of your moisturiser meaning a better result for your skin FASTER!
Exfoliants and peels remove dead skin cells so the bright, young ones can show their faces! This leaves your skin feeling and looking fresher and brighter. Just remember to use an exfoliant that is gentle on the skin, some have very harsh beads or are made up of nut shells and can actually damage the skin.
Masks can deep clean the skin, tighten pores, oxygenate, circulate and brighten the skin. Used once a week this product will ensure that your skin receives maximum results.
Eye creams/gels are effective for treating the skin around the eyes. This area of our skin is different as it is much thinner, does not produce oil and is one of the first areas on your face to show age! Start using an eye product from your mid-20’s.
Sunscreen is the last step in skincare 101 but one of the most important ones! Without this step you are leaving your skin wide open to premature ageing, lines, wrinkles and pigmentation spots. A separate sunscreen is a must – not one that is included in your moisturiser. A separate sunscreen will protect you more effectively from UVA and UVB rays. And today’s reputable sunscreens also include antioxidants, very important ingredients to prevent and repair damage done from our modern world.
